As previously reported, SSUMC and its partners have submitted an application to the state of Maryland for Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs), which will help us attract investment in our affordable housing project. While we wait for news on that application–which is not expected until late August or September–we have some other exciting news and activities to share:
- We have been notified that SSUMC will receive a state grant of $255,000 to refurbish our outdated kitchen. This kitchen, in addition to supporting the church’s ministries, is currently used by Shepherd’s Table during the week for meal preparation and for a chef’s training program. These uses support their mission to create pathways for self sufficiency and to improve the quality of life for the most vulnerable in our community. Planning for the kitchen project will begin very soon with the active involvement of Shepherd’s Table.
- Our Building Beloved Community Committee was selected to participate in the Purple Line Equitable Housing Training Series, which was organized by Enterprise Community Partners in partnership with the Purple Line Corridor Coalition. SSUMC is one of two churches involved; other groups in the training cohort include civic associations from Long Branch and Lakeland (College Park), Manna Food Center’s real estate team, and local community advocacy groups including Cheer and Montgomery for All. Three BBCC members are participating in this series which runs biweekly from June through September.
As always, if you have any questions about our building project activities and plans, please review the materials on this website, and/or send an email message to belovedcommunity@silverspringumcp.org.
